BEAUREGARD RANCH
Beauregard Plantation 1860.
... The 1860 U. S. Census indicates the Beauregard Plantation was operating during the year ending June 1, 1860. It possessed 16 slaves and 3 slave houses, 4,000 head of cattle, 1,278 head of sheep, 20 working oxen, 62 horses, 20 milk cows, 8 mules and asses and 30 swine. It produced 1,800 bushels of Indian corn, 15 bushel of oats, 2,800 pounds of wool. No cotton was produced;
Augustin Toutant's operation could be characterized as a cattle and sheep ranch.
Where was the birth of the term, "Maverick?"
Where was the birth of the term, "Maverick"? At the historic Beauregard Ranch in Wilson County and it is now included in the San Antonio Conservation Society's amazing website, "Historic Farm and Ranch Complexes in Bexar and Surrounding Counties" thanks to WCHS contributors, Allen and Regina Kosub, and Gene Maeckle. The ranch predates the formation of Wilson and Karnes Counties!
